What is on‑site SEO, and why should every website include it?

The short answer

On‑site SEO is the work done on your website itself so Google and AI search tools can understand it: clear page titles, a page for each service, sensible headings, fast loading, image descriptions and the technical setup behind the scenes. On a professionally built website, it should be included as standard, not sold as an extra.

What on‑site SEO means

SEO stands for search engine optimisation. On‑site SEO is the part that happens on your website itself, as opposed to things like Google Ads or your Google Business Profile.

Put simply, it’s making sure every page clearly tells Google what it’s about, who it’s for and where you work.

What it includes

Your customers never see any of this as “SEO”. It just makes the site clearer for everyone, people and search engines alike.

A clear page title and description for every page, the text that shows in Google
A dedicated page for each main service
Headings that follow a sensible order
Wording built around what your customers actually search for
Descriptive image names and alt text
Fast loading on phones and computers
Structured data that tells search engines your business details
A sitemap submitted to Google and Bing at launch

Why it should come as standard

A low‑cost website often looks fine but skips most of this. The pages go live without proper titles, descriptions or structure, and Google has very little to go on. The site exists, but it rarely gets found.

If you’re investing several thousand dollars in a professional website, it should be built to work in search from the start. Adding it later usually means reworking pages that should have been done properly the first time.

On‑site SEO and AI search

Google’s AI Overviews and tools like ChatGPT rely on the same signals. A clear, well‑structured website is much easier for them to understand and mention. Our guide to AI search results explains how that’s changing search.

What to ask your web designer

If the answer to any of these is no, or “that’s extra”, it’s worth asking why. Every one of our website packages includes on‑site SEO as standard.

Will every page have its own title and description?
Will each of my services get its own page?
Will you write the content around what customers search for?
Will the site be submitted to Google and Bing at launch?
